Hello, fellow gamers! Guess what’s rolling our way? It’s a fresh batch of news from Yarrow Games and Versus Evil about their upcoming deck-building roguelike, Tamarak Trail. They’ve just dropped a new blog post that takes us deep into the unique dice mechanics of this game. That’s right, dice, not cards. Intrigued? So were we!
Tamarak Trail isn’t your average deck-builder. They’ve switched up the game by swapping cards for dice, and this new mechanic is bringing along a whole new set of gaming terms. We’re talking ‘bounces’, ‘flips’, ‘infinite combos’, ‘autoroll’, and ‘reroll’. Each term has been explained in detail, with handy images or gifs to illustrate how they work in the game. Trust me, once you’ve seen these in action, you’ll be itching to give them a whirl.
So, what’s the deal with these mechanics? Well, they’re part of what makes Tamarak Trail such a robust and immersive game. From the Developer Walkthrough, we knew this game was going to be a deep dive, but this blog post takes us even further down the rabbit hole.

When the battle begins, will you trust your luck to the Auto-roll or take matters into your own hands? That’s one of the key decisions you’ll be making in Tamarak Trail.
And there’s more than dice rolling in this game. As a member of the Sturgeon Lodge, you’re tasked with uncovering the mystery of a decaying Earth and stopping the corruption at its source. You can choose from three characters, each with unique abilities and traits, and create your strategy for navigating the trail. Each journey is unique, with procedurally-generated paths that lead to new events, monsters, campsites, treasures, and more.
The battles require tactical dice-building, as each dice face could mean victory or defeat. Dice sides can be used for direct attacks, buffs and debuffs, damage over time, defence, and even to “flip” them for some combo-tastic awesomeness. You can also apply “dice cores” for passive abilities. There’s something immensely satisfying about getting your dice to smack together and trigger a killer combo attack.
Tamarak Trail is the first title from Yarrow Games, founded in 2021. The team is made up of Piotr Lipert (Programming, Game Design), Lynden Joudrey (Art, Animation), and Michael Noble (Music, SFX). Versus Evil, the publishers, are known for their critically acclaimed games like First Class Trouble, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, and The Banner Saga trilogy.
