Swiss indie devs at Sunnyside Games, in collaboration with the French boutique publishers at Dear Villagers, have just dropped an announcement that’s setting the gaming world alight.
Their fiery platformer, Nocturnal, will make its sizzling entrance on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC come June 7th. Expect to shell out $19.99 for the console experience, while the PC version will set you back a wee bit less at $16.99.
Set on the ancient isle of Nahran, Nocturnal is more than just a pretty spark. It’s an action-packed exploration odyssey that’ll have you using fire to fend off a malevolent mist and uncover the secrets that lie beneath its foggy veil.
You’ll play as Ardeshir, a soldier of the Enduring Flame, who returns to his homeland only to find it covered in a shadowy mist. Fire’s your best mate in this game, mates. You can use it to push back the mist, light up the scenery, kick-start machinery, and even singe some wicked magic beings who are impervious to your regular arsenal. But remember, you can’t breathe in the mist, so you’ll have to think on your feet to keep it at bay.
As you journey through this misty adventure, offering collected ashes to the flame will help you grow stronger. You can extend your life force, hold your breath longer, or gamble those ashes away in hopes of gaining new powers.
For those who fancy a challenge, Nocturnal comes with optional trials, speedrunning features, and for the truly brave, a Permadeath Mode. That’s right, you only get one life to complete the entire journey. How’s that for a challenge?
The early reception to Nocturnal at events like Steam Next Fest and PAX East was super positive, according to Sunnyside Games co-founder Gabriel Sonderegger. He’s stoked for players to experience the game’s unique blend of fast-paced action and tension, driven by a constant juggle of depleting light sources.
