Welcome to First Look Friday! 👀
This week, Gaming Buzz tried Sons of the Forest – the successor to the popular horror game The Forest was released in Early Access on Steam yesterday evening. Sons of the Forest is a survival horror game set on a remote island that holds terrible secrets. You can embark on your journey alone or with up to 7 other friends.
Here are some short scenes that we recorded while plating for the first time:
This is just a short glimpse into the content in Sons of the Forest and I tried to avoid major spoilers while still showing off some of the new stuff.
Content
There is plenty of new content to explore but the main gameplay feels very similar to The Forest. You crash on the island, scout the area for loot and a good place to stay and build your base. You go explore on the main map as well as in caves. The map is very big and highly detailed and it is very easy to get lost in the lush forest areas. Thankfully, we have access to a GPS device to help with navigation.
Performance
The performance was amazing, especially for a title that has just been released in Early Access without any “day 1 patches”. The multiplayer connection was flawless as well and we didn’t experience any crashes or disconnects.
Visuals
Sons of the Forest looks very good with a realistic approach to graphics. The weather and shading effects feel very real and look gorgeous. Caves are nice and dark and you can almost feel the cold and damp air around you. The visuals are a huge factor influencing the atmosphere in the game, together with the realistic sound design.
Is it worth a “second look”?
Yes! I absolutely loved the first game, The Forest, and Sons of the Forest feels just like it but better. It does not feel like an Early Access game in the early stages at least and runs very smoothly already. If you are looking for an atmospheric horror survival game with extensive crafting, building and exploration aspects, this is your game!
Where can I buy Sons of the Forest?
Sons of the Forest Early Access is only available on Steam at the moment:
